Water saving tip #4

By James Lombard   (2016-02-26)

Only run the dishwasher on a full load

It is generally accepted that a modern dishwasher is more water efficient than washing your dishes by hand. However, the average dishwasher still uses about 20 litres per load, irrespective of whether you are washing one plate or a dinner party’s worth of dishes. To make sure that no water is wasted, only run the dishwasher on a full load.

Avoid pre-rinsing dishes as this step can use up to 80 litres of water and is unnecessary if the dishwasher is correctly loaded and a reliable dishwashing soap is used. Most dishwasher user-manuals contain a loading guide which explains how to load your dishwasher for a thorough wash. Be careful not to overlaod the dishwasher as this may hinder optimum cleaning performance.
